What are Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial roots for your teeth which is placed in the jaw to and the root of a tooth or bridge to keep it in your mouth. If you’ve lost an adult tooth or teeth you may require a dental implant.

Types of Dental Implants

There are 2 types of dental implants that could be used when implanting a tooth: Endosteal and Subperiosteal . Endosteal implants are the most commonly used during implant procedures.

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal, or in the bone implants, are surgically placed into the jawbone using a variety of screws and blades to hold it in place. After the implants have been inserted and the surrounding tissue heals, a second surgical procedure is needed so that the original implant can be connected to a post then the artificial tooth can finally be attached to the post itself.

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal Implants consist of a frame made of metal that is fitted onto the jawbone underneath the gums. Then posts are attached to the metal frame and the artificial teeth are finally implanted to the posts, just as they are with endosteal implants.

What are dental Bridges?

Bridges are a fixed dental prosthetic that are used to replace damaged or missing teeth by conjoining artificial teeth with neighbouring teeth or other implants. Bridges are created by reducing the surface area of the teeth the bridge will be using as it’s supports by using a special device.

Typically dental bridges are constructed using materials such as gold, PFM (porcelain fused to metal), porcelain by itself, or ceramics. To understand the difference between all ceramic crowns and PFM click here
