Solaris Dental Design Inc. provides a full range of dental solutions from high quality fixed dental prosthesis to value-added continuing education for dentists and technicians throughout the Lower Mainland.

Established in 2004 at the Waterfront Centre Mall in Vancouver, Solaris was the first all-ceramic dental laboratory in British Columbia. In 2008, after 7 years of operation, D.Tek Canada Laboratories Inc. closed its doors to merge with Solaris. By the third quarter of 2010, Oral Design Incorporated finalized the conglomerate.

Acquiring its own building in 17 Fawcett Road, Coquitlam is the first among many steps to expand and modernize the dental laboratory.

The quality control process is very much part of the company culture.

We are living in competitive times, but business is definitely still out there. In the early days, gold crowns were just something that people had to have. These days, people have more choices and they are more careful. They want something authentic, durable, and biocompatible.

People are always prepared to pay for something that is different and has a substantial value. We believe that a product should be of the highest quality and withstand the test of time. We want to create crowns that the patient will still be wearing naturally decades from now.

Would we make less expensive crowns to beat offshore productions?

No. Definitely not. We do not think it would be right to come up with something much cheaper because it means that we would need a different kind of craftsmanship. When discussing with people who work in production, sometimes they show a product and say it has to be scrapped as it has porosity. We say we can’t see them, so they tell us to use a microscope. Should we tell them not to look so closely because our products must be produced cheaply? Should we use scrap metal to cast our crowns and use substandard porcelain? I don not think our customers would like that. Even without patients knowing, the guilt of providing crowns that will break, leak, and cause health concerns will not let us sleep at night. There is no pillow so soft as a clear conscience.

People would probably love to have a Solaris crown for half the price, but that is not possible because of the work and materials that go into them. Our dentists and patients want the quality, and for them the price is only secondary. In the end, health is wealth and a thing of beauty is a joy forever.
